Gabbeh weaving comes from the nomadic and semi-nomadic Qashqai and Lori tribes of the Zagros mountains. Gabbeh means raw, uncut, natural, and the form was historically a household weaving rather than a workshop product. A weaver chose her own colours, drew her own animals and lozenges, and kept the pile long because the rugs had to insulate a tent floor against winter ground. The looseness of the drawing is the point, not a flaw.
2 weavers shared the loom for four to five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at roughly 120 KPSI. Around 414,720 hand-tied knots, every one against a vertical loom. The colour was prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into the dye before being lifted, dried, and wound onto the warp. The cartoon was drawn at full scale and pinned behind the warp, with the finishing pass done by hand shears to lift the drawing.
The composition
The palette settles around red, supported by quieter passages that let the dominant tone carry the field. The drawing builds in layers, with the border framing rather than competing with the centre. Vegetable dye gives the colour the slight irregularity that pigment-printed carpets cannot reproduce. Over a decade of use the saturation will soften, the contrasts will settle, and the field will warm into the patina that makes hand-knotted wool a different category of object from any printed alternative. The motifs are drawn at a scale that registers from across a room and rewards a close look at the bend of a leaf or the curve of a tendril.
What you are buying
An entry point into collecting hand-tied wool work. Every knot was placed by hand, the fibre is real wool on a cotton foundation, and the rug will outlive any printed or machine-woven alternative at the same price. It rewards use and softens into the patina that printed carpet can only imitate.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm). The scale works as the centre of a primary living room or under a dining table sized to the rug. Pull the seating onto the field rather than around it, and let the borders register against the perimeter of the room. The red palette pairs with walnut, oak, and warm stone floors, and sits comfortably with linen, leather, and brass. Direct sunlight from a window helps the dyes hold their depth.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub the pile. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Treated this way, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
