Rugsville Gabbeh Tribal Wool Red Carpet 3' x 5'

The Gabbeh tradition was built inside tents, not workshops. A weaver worked from memory and feeling, drew animals and trees and lozenges as she remembered them, and kept the pile thick because the rug had to do the work of a floor in a portable home. Modern Gabbehs in this lineage preserve the same logic. The drawing is direct, the wool is heavy, and the colour is vegetable-dyed in a small range that lets the field do most of the talking.

1 weaver shared the loom for three to four months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at roughly 120 KPSI. Around 259,200 hand-tied knots, every one against a vertical loom. The colour was prepared in small batches and the wool was lowered into the dye before being lifted, dried, and wound onto the warp. The cartoon was drawn at full scale and pinned behind the warp, with the finishing pass done by hand shears to lift the drawing.

The composition

Red carries the field. The supporting tones sit quieter, holding the composition together without claiming attention. The wool was dyed in small batches in copper vats, and the slight variance from row to row gives the surface depth that a single uniform colour cannot reach. The rug will lighten and warm with sun and use over the next ten to fifteen years. Look closely and the drawing reveals the work of a weaver thinking through the pattern row by row, not a printer translating a file to ink.

An entry point into collecting hand-tied wool work. Every knot was placed by hand, the fibre is real wool on a cotton foundation, and the rug will outlive any printed or machine-woven alternative at the same price. It rewards use and softens into the patina that printed carpet can only imitate.

The piece in a room

3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm). The proportions suit a study or reading room, where a single armchair, a side table, and a floor lamp let the rug do most of the work. The composition holds the room without requiring a great deal of furniture above it. The red palette pairs with walnut, oak, and warm stone floors, and sits comfortably with linen, leather, and brass. Direct sunlight from a window helps the dyes hold their depth.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub the pile. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Treated this way, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.
