About 950,000 hand-tied knots. Roughly four months of work for two weavers on a vertical loom. A Gabbeh is built around volume and colour saturation rather than around fineness of drawing, and the proof is in the weight of the finished piece. Lift one corner and you understand the construction; this is wool laid down in the count and density of a piece of clothing rather than the count of a decorative carpet.

The pile is hand-spun wool from southern Indian highland flocks, tied in the Persian asymmetric knot at a moderate density that lets the colour fields breathe. The dye work was small-batch with plant and mineral pigments, and the multiple colour blocks were laid out without a printed cartoon, the weavers working from memory and from a master drawing held by the workshop. The pile was sheared in two passes to bring the surface to an even sixteen-millimetre depth.

The composition

Bands and blocks of saturated colour, drawn from the tribal Qashqai and Lori vocabulary. Reds, ochres, deep blues, and ivory move across the field in irregular geometric segments rather than in a strict repeat. The colour relationships are blunt and direct, exactly the quality that draws collectors of contemporary art to this category. Over the first decade the dyes age toward each other and the contrasts soften without losing their definition.

What you are buying

Antique multi-colour Gabbehs of this scale and brightness, in clean condition, trade through specialist dealers at twelve to twenty-five thousand dollars. This is a current weaving in the same tradition, on a hand-built loom, in hand-spun wool, with the same knot density a period piece would carry. The rug appreciates with use as the wool develops its patina, and the multi-colour Gabbehs in particular are increasingly difficult to source as the workshops shift to plainer tonal work.

The piece in a room

5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) anchors a study, a child's room, or a reading corner where the colour can do its work without overwhelming a larger field. The multi palette pairs well with white walls, warm timber, and confident modern art. Avoid placing the rug under heavily patterned upholstery; the carpet expects to be the dominant graphic element.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so daylight reaches all the colour blocks evenly. Weekly vacuum with the beater bar off. Spills should be blotted with clean cotton from the outside of the stain inward. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
