About one point seven million asymmetric knots tied by hand. Roughly four months at the loom for two weavers. The numbers behind a 6' x 9' Gabbeh are the same numbers the southwest Persian tribes worked under a hundred years ago, except the loom now stands in a workshop in India rather than in a hill camp on the Zagros, and the wool comes from New Zealand rather than from local fat-tailed flocks. The discipline is unchanged. The cartoon stays in the weaver's head; the figures arrive on the warps as the weaver decides where they belong.

The rust ground in this rug was dyed from madder root, prepared in a copper vat with alum and cream of tartar mordant, with the wool dipped twice over a ten-day cycle to reach saturation. Coloured accents on the figures were drawn from indigo, walnut hull, and weld, each prepared in its own bath. The foundation is undyed cotton. Pile is around 11 mm, longer than a city carpet, true to the Gabbeh handfeel.

The composition

A warm rust field, with stylised tribal animals, diamonds, and a low-key central marker placed off-symmetry. The rust is not a single tone. The wool came from two slightly different dye lots, leaving faint horizontal abrash that catches raking light and prevents the field from settling into wallpaper. Cream and indigo accents on the figures pull forward against the warm ground. The whole composition ages into a softer terracotta over the first decade of use.

What you are buying

Antique Gabbehs in this size and palette with pre-1940 provenance appear at European specialists at the equivalent of seven to twelve lakh. The construction here is the same, the wool is finer, and the dye chemistry is honest. A vegetable-dyed Gabbeh appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a periodic specialist wash brings the colours back to first-light condition.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is a primary bedroom scale or a smaller living-room scale. The rust ground throws warm light into a room and pairs particularly well with deep teal walls, brass casework, and dark wood. Against pale walls the rug becomes the only colour event, which is exactly the relationship a tribal Gabbeh expects.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end twice yearly so wear distributes evenly. Vacuum on suction only, beater bar disabled. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, working from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years to preserve the lanolin and reset the surface.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
