Rust and green together is the colour pairing the early Gabbeh weavers reached for whenever they wanted a rug to read as warm earth and growing things at the same time. Madder gave them the rust. Weld over indigo gave them the green. The combination shows up in the older Lori weavings the Western collectors started buying in the 1970s, and it remains one of the most legible ways to bring a Gabbeh into a contemporary room. The rug here is built on that same temperature contrast.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for around six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool, scoured in cold water and dyed in small batches so each colour run carries faint abrash. Madder root supplied the rust ground, with the wool dipped twice over fourteen days for depth. Weld and indigo were combined for the green field accents, and walnut hull provided the deeper browns. Knot density runs around 100 KPSI in the Gabbeh tradition, allowing the pile to stand thick and the colour to read as mass.

The composition

A field of warm rust dominates one register, a deep mossy green the other. Tribal animal motifs in cream and indigo sit across both grounds. The interaction between the two fields is the rug's main event: rust pulls forward, green recedes, and the eye moves between them rather than landing in one place. The border is restrained, two thin guard stripes letting the colour fields work uninterrupted.

What you are buying

Tribal Gabbehs from the early twentieth century with comparable colour balance and condition list at Western dealers and at the lower estimates of European auctions at the equivalent of nine to fifteen lakh. The construction here is the same, the wool is finer, and the dye chemistry is honest. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a serious hand-wash every several years brings the wool back to its original lustre.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) supports a primary living arrangement or a dining table for six. The rust-and-green pairing settles into rooms with warm wood floors, copper or brass lighting, and walls in soft white or muted clay. It pairs poorly with strongly patterned wallpaper; the rug expects to be the only major colour event in the composition.

Conservation

Rotate end-for-end twice a year so light and traffic age the rug evenly. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no rotary brush. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to six years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
