Gabbeh is the only major hand-knotted tradition that grew out of nomadic life rather than out of court patronage. The Qashqai and Lori weavers of the southern Zagros made these rugs for their own tents, with high pile, simple geometry, and tribal figures, and the form survived because nothing about it was decorative in a courtly sense. The drawing on this carpet stays inside that lineage, an open ivory field with sparse tribal incident.
Two to three weavers shared the loom for around five months. Hand-spun wool was tied in the Persian asymmetric knot, with knot density deliberately kept moderate to allow the high pile a Gabbeh requires. The ivory ground was drawn from undyed fleece selected for evenness of tone, and the figures were tied from small batches of natural wool. The pile is roughly fifteen millimetres after shearing, dense enough to take heavy daily use without compacting.
The composition
An open ivory field with isolated tribal figures, animals, and small geometric forms placed without a strict ground plan. The composition reads as drawing on a clean page rather than as a controlled repeat. The undyed wool ages toward a warm bone, and the small graphic incidents stay sharp because the figures are pulled in slightly darker tones rather than in saturated dyes.
What you are buying
Antique Gabbehs in clean condition trade through the European specialist dealers in the fifteen to thirty thousand dollar range. This is a current weaving in the same tradition and the same fibre, on a hand-built loom. The rug appreciates with use as the wool develops a patina; tribal weavings of this kind are among the few floor coverings that gain rather than lose value over the long horizon.
The piece in a room
8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) suits a primary bedroom, a meditation room, or a relaxed living space where the rug can carry the floor without competition. The ivory ground sits well on dark walnut and on bleached oak in equal measure. The figures are spaced loosely enough that the rug reads as a calm field from across the room and as drawing from close.
Conservation
Rotate every six months so the high pile compacts evenly. Weekly vacuum, suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills immediately; the high pile will lift wine and oil if treated within minutes. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
