Tribal Gabbeh is the only major rug genre in which the weaver works without a paper cartoon. The pattern is held in memory or improvised at the loom, and the result is closer to a drawing than a textile diagram. The yellow ground tradition in particular is associated with the older Lori and Qashqai weavings of the Zagros range, where a saffron or mustard field carried scattered animal motifs and small tribal totems. This rug is a contemporary continuation of that practice, woven in India to the same logic and the same wool standard.

About two and a half million asymmetric knots tied across roughly six months by a team of three weavers. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool selected for staple length and elasticity. Yarn was dyed in copper vats charged with weld and pomegranate rind for the gold ground, then spun together in plied lots so the field gathers depth from variation rather than from a single flat tone. The foundation is undyed cotton, tensioned vertically against an upright beam.

The composition

A warm gold field, between honey and wheat in temperature, with stylised quadrupeds, water vessels, and tribal markers placed at irregular intervals. The figures read as a quiet inventory of a nomadic life rather than as decorative repeats. The rug ages into a softer butter tone over the first decade, the indigo and madder accents on the figures deepening rather than fading, since vegetable dye binds to wool molecularly.

What you are buying

Comparable Qashqai gold-ground Gabbehs from before 1930 in saleable condition list through Western specialists at the equivalent of nine to fifteen lakh. This is the same fibre, the same knot type, the same dye chemistry, and a fresher wool. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the cleanliness of the modern weaving is gradually replaced by the burnish of a long-used floor.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) settles beneath a primary seating arrangement or a generous dining table. The gold ground throws warm light upward into a room and sits naturally with cane, rattan, dark walnut, antique brass, and unbleached linen. It works against deep teal or dark green walls particularly well, where the saturation finds its complementary balance.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so wear distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with a suction-only attachment; rotary brushes pull at hand-knotted pile. Treat spills by blotting with a dry cotton cloth, never rubbing. A specialist hand-wash every five to six years restores lanolin and resets the pile.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
