The composition is built around the warmth contrast between camel and rust. Everything else in the rug works in service of it. Camel, the colour of undyed sheep wool with a faint walnut rinse, is the older and more nomadic of the two tones. Rust, drawn from madder, is the workhorse warm dye of the Persian and tribal traditions. Set side by side they read like the difference between firelight and earth, and the southwest Persian weavers reached for them whenever they wanted a rug to feel of a particular landscape rather than of a city workshop.
Two weavers worked the loom in India for roughly four months. Hand-spun New Zealand wool, longer staple than commercial yarn, runs through the pile. The camel ground was achieved by lightly rinsing the natural fleece in walnut hull rather than by overdyeing, which preserves the irregular tonal life of the wool. The madder rust was developed in a copper vat over ten days, twice-dipped, alum-mordanted. Foundation is undyed cotton, drawn tight on a vertical loom.
The composition
The two main colours alternate across the field rather than dividing it cleanly. Tribal animal motifs, diamonds, and small markers sit across both registers. Camel reads forward in cool light and recedes in warm light; rust does the opposite, which keeps the rug visually active across the time of day. A narrow indigo border holds the composition without competing with the central interaction.
What you are buying
Antique tribal Gabbehs of comparable scale and palette from the first half of the twentieth century list at Western dealers at the equivalent of seven to twelve lakh. The wool, the knot, and the dye programme here match the antique standard. A vegetable-dyed wool rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, in part because the dye continues to develop and in part because the wool burnishes under traffic.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) sits well in a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, in a smaller living room as the central anchor, or in a dining alcove with a four-seat table. The camel-and-rust palette pairs naturally with cane, raw teak, leather chairs, and clay-tile floors. It works against deep navy or hunter-green walls particularly well, where the warm contrast pulls the rug forward.
Conservation
Rotate the rug end-to-end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth from the outer edge in toward the spill. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to six years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
