A Gabbeh is the rug a weaver makes for herself before she makes one for the market. The motifs are personal: a flock counted in dots, a tree of life, a single field of one colour broken by a memory. That self-reliant logic governs this weaving, where every decision sits inside the loom's grammar rather than borrowed from a designer's drawing.
The pile is hand-knotted natural jute on a cotton foundation, with a softer rebound than the more common wool variant. 2-3 weavers worked the loom for 4-5 months, with the open knot count this fibre demands. That gives a finished count of around 506 thousand hand-tied knots. The jute was naturally dyed in small batches, washed in clean water, and sun-dried over several days. The fibre's open structure rewards the looser knot count and gives the pile a cool hand under bare feet.
The composition
The field is open, the geometry sits where it falls, and the colour shifts with the wool from one knot to the next. That irregularity is structural to the form. A flat field on a Gabbeh would be a contradiction. The dominant tones run to brown.
What you are buying
What you are paying for is several months of weaver-time on a loom, in wool of a specified micron, on a cotton foundation that has to outlast every soft fibre tied into it. The price reflects the labour rather than a brand premium. The piece compounds in value over a domestic ownership cycle.
The piece in a room
5'6" x 8' (168 x 244 cm) is the canonical scale for a primary living room with a sectional or two facing sofas above it. The composition is built to be read from the standing height of someone walking into the room. Pairs with linen upholstery, walnut joinery, and unframed art on the long wall.
Conservation
Vacuum once a week with the beater bar disengaged. Rotate the rug 180 degrees every six months to keep the wear even. Use a clean cotton cloth on spills and work from the perimeter inward. Engage a hand-wash conservator every five years for the deep clean a domestic process cannot reach. The piece holds its value across decades of household use.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
