Gabbeh weaving belongs to the nomadic Qashqai and Lori tradition of southern Iran, where the loom was set on the ground, the design carried in the weaver's head rather than on a cartoon, and the pile was left long to make the rug warm enough to sleep on. The blue Gabbeh in this idiom takes that long-pile weight and applies it to a contemporary tribal palette, with the indigo ground holding the field and small geometric figures scattered through it.

Three to four weavers shared the upright loom for around six months. Hand-spun wool was dyed in small lots, the blue drawn from indigo over multiple immersions to build saturation, and the accent colours drawn from madder, walnut, and weld. The pile was left long, around fifteen millimetres after finishing, to honour the original Gabbeh tradition of a deep wool surface.

The composition

A field of deep tribal blue carrying a small repertoire of geometric figures in ivory, ochre, and faded madder. There is no central medallion. The figures are scattered across the field in the loose tribal arrangement that the Gabbeh tradition prefers. The pile is deep and the wool reads soft underfoot. Over the first decade the blue will deepen as the indigo oxidises and the wool will polish under traffic.

What you are buying

Antique Qashqai and Lori Gabbehs at international auction sell between three and eight lakh depending on age and condition. This is a new tribal weaving in the same idiom on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, at a fraction of that figure. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, an attribute no other domestic object underfoot can claim.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room scale, anchoring a sitting room arranged around a full sectional or a dining set for eight. The deep blue Gabbeh ground reads against cream plaster walls, against pale oak floors, and against deep walnut joinery. The long pile invites bare feet and rewards rooms used for reading and quiet conversation.

Conservation

Suction vacuum every week with the beater bar off; the long pile is easily torn at the knot by aggressive vacuuming. Rotate end to end each spring and autumn. Blot spills with a clean white cotton cloth pressed against the pile. A wool conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years to restore lanolin.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
