Gabbeh weaving comes from the Qashqai and Lori nomads of the Zagros mountains, where the loom traveled with the camp and the design was decided at the moment of weaving rather than from a paper cartoon. The word itself translates loosely to raw, unclipped, natural. A Gabbeh in the older idiom is a record of what the weaver saw on the day she sat down at the warps. The blue field in this rug carries forward that tradition, with simple tribal figures placed by intuition across an open ground rather than locked into a symmetrical repeat.
Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool, longer in staple than commercial wool and slightly uneven in the way that gives Gabbeh its hand-feel. Wool was scoured in cold river water, spun on drop spindles, and dyed in vats charged with indigo for the dominant ground. The knots are tied at a comfortable density for the genre, around 100 KPSI, allowing the pile to stand thick and the colour to read as mass rather than as fine line.
The composition
A deep indigo field anchors the rug. Across it, undyed ivory animal silhouettes and small tribal markers float at irregular intervals. The blue is not flat. Two slightly different dye lots were used, leaving subtle abrash bands that catch raking light and prevent the colour from settling into wallpaper. The borders are restrained, a pair of narrow guard stripes in cream and rust rather than the busy framing seen in commercial revivals.
What you are buying
Genuine antique Qashqai Gabbehs from the early twentieth century in comparable condition trade through Western dealers and the lower estimates at Rippon Boswell at three to five times this figure. The construction here is identical, the wool is finer, and the dye programme is honest. A vegetable-dyed Gabbeh appreciates with use rather than depreciating, the wool burnishing under foot and the indigo slowly settling into a softer patina.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits well under a primary sofa with two flanking chairs, or beneath a six-seat dining table with the chair backs falling on the rug. The blue holds against limewashed plaster, raw oak, and bleached teak. It pairs especially well with brass lamps and dark walnut casework, where the indigo reads as a graphic counterweight to warm woods.
Conservation
Rotate end-for-end every six months so foot traffic ages the pile evenly. Vacuum on suction-only, beater bar disabled. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth working from the edge inward. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every six to seven years to refresh the lanolin in the fibre.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
