Gabbeh is the tribal weaving tradition of the Qashqai and Luri pastoralists of southwest Persia, originally a thick, coarse, deliberately rough piled rug woven on a horizontal ground loom by women in the family encampment, with the design improvised as the weaver moved up the warp. The motifs are figurative: a stylised lion, a row of camels, a tree of life, a child's hand. There is no cartoon, no plotted graph, no symmetry of repeat. Each Gabbeh is a record of the weaver's day. Indian Gabbeh draws on that lineage and rebuilds it with hand-spun wool and natural dye, holding the improvisational character but refining the fibre.

This 6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) carpet was hand-knotted in India by two to three weavers over five months on a vertical loom. The pile is hand-spun, hand-carded wool on a cotton foundation, tied with the Persian asymmetric knot, the surface left thicker than a typical fine wool rug to keep the tribal character of the Gabbeh tradition. The wool was dyed in indigo with copper mordant for the blue ground and in madder for the figurative motifs. Each dye bath was prepared over two weeks before the wool was lowered.

The composition

A blue field with figurative tribal motifs in cream, rust, and graphite scattered across it without the strict symmetry of urban Persian work. The motifs include a row of stylised animals, a small tree form, and the diamond shapes that the Qashqai weavers use as protective symbols. The hand-spun wool absorbs the indigo unevenly, and the blue reads as a watercolour wash from a distance and as half a dozen graded blues at close range. The dyes will deepen with light and traffic across the carpet's first decade.

What you are buying

Antique Qashqai Gabbehs from the early twentieth century sell at Western auction houses between four and ten lakh rupees depending on condition. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same vertical loom, with the same hand-spun wool and the same natural dye chain. The piece is hand-knotted in India and appreciates with use rather than depreciating. The improvisational character, where no two Gabbehs are alike, makes the tradition particularly resistant to commodity pricing.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) anchors a primary sitting area without dictating it. The blue ground pairs with oak, walnut, raw linen, brass, and white plaster walls. The figurative motifs work especially well in rooms with a single piece of strong contemporary art; the tribal vocabulary plays against the modern register rather than competing with it. Avoid placing the rug against strongly patterned walls or upholstery; the Gabbeh expects to be the principal storytelling element.

Conservation

Rotate one hundred eighty degrees annually so light and traffic age the field evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar lifted. Blot promptly with a clean cotton cloth. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the piece every six to eight years to restore lanolin and refresh the surface. With this care, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and the blue deepens.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
