Beige is the most undervalued ground colour in tribal weaving. It looks plain in a photograph and reads as architecture in person. The southwest Persian tribes used a beige field whenever they wanted figures to do the work without competition, and the practice survived into modern Gabbeh weaving as a way of letting wool quality speak. The rug in front of you is built on that idea: an open biscuit ground, scattered tribal incidents, and a restrained border that names the piece as Gabbeh without crowding it.
Three weavers tied roughly two point eight million Persian asymmetric knots over six months in India. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool, with the natural fleece kept undyed for most of the field and lightly tinted with walnut hull to push the cream toward warmer beige. Coloured incidents were dyed in small batches from madder, indigo, and pomegranate rind. The foundation is undyed cotton, double-warped at the selvedge for long wear under furniture loads.
The composition
The eye lands first on the open beige ground, which carries a faint tonal abrash from natural variation in the fleece. Small stylised animals, diamonds, and a low-key medallion sit at irregular spacings rather than in symmetrical rows. The rust accents have a slightly orange cast in cool light and a deeper brick cast in warm light, the way madder reads to the human eye depending on what surrounds it. A single narrow border in the same rust frames without enclosing.
What you are buying
Antique tribal Gabbehs of similar scale and condition with documented pre-1930 provenance trade through Western dealers at the equivalent of ten to eighteen lakh. This is the same wool grade, the same hand-spun approach, the same vegetable dye programme. A vegetable-dyed Gabbeh appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the wool burnishes, the abrash deepens, and the rug accumulates rather than loses value.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room or a dining room with a six-to-eight seat table. The beige ground supports rather than dictates: it pairs with linen, jute, raw teak, and bleached oak. Walls in dusty rose, ochre, or any medium-saturation green pull the figures forward without flattening the field.
Conservation
Rotate every six months. Vacuum on suction only with the rotary brush disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub or scrub. A specialist hand-wash every five to six years preserves the wool and resets the abrash.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
