Hand-spun New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a tribal Gabbeh palette needs without crushing under foot. It runs longer in staple than commercial Indian wool and keeps a faint irregularity in the spin, which is what holds the slight lustre and abrash that distinguishes a hand-spun rug from a millspun one. The rust-and-beige tradition in Gabbeh weaving is built on this fibre. The colour pairing is one of the oldest in the southwest Persian repertoire, used whenever the weaver wanted warmth without overstatement.
Around four months of focused work in India by two weavers brought this piece off the warps. Madder root was prepared in a copper vat with alum mordant and dipped twice over a ten-day cycle to reach the rust depth. The beige ground used natural undyed fleece lightly toned with walnut hull. Pile thickness sits at around 11 mm. Knot density is roughly 100 KPSI in the Gabbeh standard, where the pile stands thick and the surface reads as colour mass rather than as drawn detail.
The composition
A soft beige ground covers the larger area, with a band of warm rust running across one register and tribal animal motifs scattered between the two fields. The colour interaction is quiet rather than dramatic; the rug is built to settle into a room rather than to demand the room rearrange around it. Cream and faint indigo accents on the figures provide enough small contrast to keep the eye moving without breaking the calm.
What you are buying
Antique tribal Gabbehs in 5x8 with comparable colour balance and pre-1950 provenance list at Western dealers at the equivalent of six to ten lakh when condition permits. This is the same wool grade, the same knot type, the same dye chemistry. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and a wool-trained hand-wash every several years restores the surface to near-new condition.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' (152 x 244 cm) is a working scale for a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed, for a smaller living area, or for a study with one seating pair. The rust-and-beige palette holds against limewashed plaster, raw oak floors, brass and copper lighting, and undyed linen upholstery. It works particularly well in north-facing rooms, where the warm tones counteract the cooler natural light.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn every six months. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no rotary brush. Treat spills by blotting with a clean cotton cloth from the outer edge inward. Hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to six years to preserve the lanolin and refresh the dye saturation.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
