Hand-tufting is the technique that lets a designer move from a small studio drawing to a finished room-scale rug without committing to the multi-month timeline of the knotted loom. The wool is pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time and sealed at the back, keeping the drawing crisp and the production short enough to allow real design iteration. It is the working medium of contemporary carpet practice the way oil on canvas was the working medium of Renaissance painting.
The work was carried out in India over about three weeks. A tufter pushed wool through stretched cotton canvas, the back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and a finisher took long shears across the surface to bring the drawing into relief. Done well, the technique keeps the pattern crisp for years and the saturated colour reads cleanly across the field even as the room around it changes its lighting through the day.
The composition
Red dominates the composition. The pattern is carved into the pile rather than printed on it, which is why the contrast deepens with use rather than fading. The wool is yarn-dyed before the gun is loaded, locking the colour into the staple, and the finishing shears were used to lift the figured area above the ground field.
The piece in a room
A 3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm) format works as an entry, a bedside layer, or a small reading nook. The red field gives the room an axis. Walnut, oak, linen upholstery, leather sit comfortably on it; the geometry pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the only graphic element holding the floor.
Care
Suction-only vacuuming on a weekly schedule. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth; rubbing pushes liquid into the latex backing. Initial shedding settles after about six weeks of use. Plan a professional dry clean every two to three years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
