Persian tribal weaving on a beige ground is an older instinct than the saturated city carpet. Before chemical dyes arrived in the 1880s, the most prized fields among the southwest tribes were the undyed and faintly tinted wools that let the figures and borders carry the colour load. The weaver wanted the eye to read figure against background without the ground competing. This rug returns to that older grammar. The field is a soft, biscuit beige, and the small tribal incident sits against it without being chased by the surroundings.

Two weavers worked the loom in India for around four and a half months. The wool is hand-spun New Zealand fleece for the pile, selected for natural creaminess so the beige ground required only a light walnut-hull rinse rather than full overdyeing. Coloured accents on the figures were drawn from madder root for the rusts, indigo for the deeper blues, and oak gall for the soft browns, each dye prepared in the older mordant tradition with alum and ash.

The composition

A quiet beige field. Small tribal animals, diamonds, and a single restrained medallion punctuate the centre. A thin rust border holds the composition in place. The colour balance gives the rug an almost paper-like quality at first viewing, like a sketch on linen, before the eye picks up the smaller incidents in indigo and umber. Beige in this rug is a working colour rather than a default; the ground has tonal variation a chemically dyed flat would never carry.

What you are buying

Antique tribal Gabbehs of comparable scale and palette from the early twentieth century list at Western dealers in the range of seven to twelve lakh when condition allows. This rug is the same construction, the same fibre, and the same dye logic, at a fraction of the auction figure. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and cleans up with hand-washing in a way no synthetic-dyed equivalent can.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) is an under-sofa or under-bed scale rather than a dining-room scale. The beige reads as architecture, not as ornament, which lets a strong piece of art on the wall above carry the room. It pairs with limestone or pale travertine flooring particularly well, with linen upholstery, with raw teak, and with the cool greys of polished concrete.

Conservation

Rotate the rug end-to-end every six months. Vacuum weekly, suction only, no rotary brush. Use a dry cotton cloth and gentle blotting on spills, working inward from the edge to avoid spreading. Hand-washing by a wool-trained conservator every five years preserves the lanolin and resets the colour values.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
