Modern Gabbeh is a deliberate distillation of the older nomadic weaving. Where a tribal Gabbeh might carry six or eight different motifs across the field, a modern Gabbeh narrows the language to a single open ground, a small cluster of figures, and one or two abstract markers. The result reads closer to a colour field painting than to a traditional carpet. Brown is the natural ground colour for this idiom because it draws on the undyed wool tones the weavers grew up handling, before any pigment touched the fleece.

The loom in India held this rug for around five and a half months under three pairs of hands. Hand-spun New Zealand wool was the only fibre on the pile side, with the natural sheep tones blended in plied yarn to give the brown ground its tonal depth. Walnut hull added warmth where needed. Touches of indigo and madder appear on a small cluster of figures. Knot density is around 100 KPSI, which is the comfortable standard for Gabbeh; the pile stands thick and the colour reads as substance rather than as drawn line.

The composition

An open chocolate-and-cocoa ground, with subtle abrash from natural fleece variation, dominates the rug. A small group of stylised animals sits in the upper third, leaving the lower two-thirds to read as field. The brown carries red undertones in warm light and grey undertones in cool light, the way undyed wool always does. The composition rewards a long look. The longer the eye sits with it, the more incident emerges from the ground.

What you are buying

Modern hand-knotted Gabbehs at this density and fibre quality from named European retailers list at the equivalent of two to three lakh. The construction here matches; the dye chemistry matches. A vegetable-dyed Gabbeh appreciates with use rather than depreciating. Wool floors burnish over years rather than wearing, and the abrash deepens into a record of where the rug was lived on.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the right scale for a primary living area or a generous bedroom. The brown ground reads as a quiet floor that lets upholstery, art, and lighting carry the room. It works particularly well with cream linen, raw oak, and unpolished brass, and against pale walls where the temperature contrast lets the rug claim its space without dominating.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum weekly with suction only. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, working from outside in. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to six years to preserve fibre lanolin and reset the surface.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
