A black-ground Gabbeh inverts the typical tribal palette and treats the field as a saturated dark ground rather than as a warm earth tone. The decision changes everything about how the rug behaves in a room, the figures are pushed forward by the field, and the wool reads as object rather than as floor. The drawing here uses the same Qashqai vocabulary the southern weavers have carried for generations.

Two weavers worked the loom for around four and a half months. The pile is hand-spun New Zealand wool tied in the Persian asymmetric knot. The black ground was dyed in small open vats over multiple immersions because a single dye dip cannot reach this saturation in animal fibre. The wool was lifted and re-immersed three times across two weeks before the colour was set with a final mordant. The pile was sheared to fifteen millimetres after a hand-finishing of the long edges.

The composition

A black field carries lighter tribal figures, simple geometric forms, and a sparse animal vocabulary. The contrast is the point. The black absorbs the room light and the lighter elements seem to float clear of the ground. Over the first decade the black settles into a near-charcoal, and the figures lift further as the surrounding pile compacts. The carpet ages toward graphic clarity rather than toward softness.

What you are buying

Saturated dark-ground Gabbehs in this fibre and density rarely surface on the auction trade because they have always been special-order pieces. Comparable contemporary work moves through the European specialist trade at fifteen to twenty-five thousand dollars. The rug here is built to that specification and to that knot density. It appreciates with use rather than depreciating.

The piece in a room

5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) is the working scale for a primary bedroom or for a study with a single seating group. The black ground holds confidently against pale walls and reads as a controlled dark void on dark walls. Brass, oxidised copper, and warm timber sit naturally with the palette. Avoid heavy black furniture; the rug expects to lead the dark hierarchy in the room.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so traffic and light age the surface evenly. Weekly vacuum, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill from the outside in with cotton. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years protects the dye depth.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
