By the late twentieth century the Gabbeh tradition had spread from its southern Iranian origin into a network of Indian workshops that adopted the form for the Western dealer trade. The discipline of the original survives, the open field, the high pile, the tribal vocabulary, but the workmanship has settled into a level of consistency the nomadic weavers could not always achieve. The carpet here is a current product of that continuity.

Two weavers worked the loom for roughly four and a half months. Hand-spun New Zealand wool was tied with the Persian asymmetric knot, with a knot density chosen to support a high pile rather than to maximise drawing fineness, the correct trade-off for a Gabbeh. The beige ground was drawn from undyed fleece, and small tribal accents were tied in slightly darker undyed wool. The pile was finished to fifteen millimetres after two shearing passes.

The composition

A beige ground reads as a single open field. Small geometric incidents are scattered across the surface, sparse enough that the eye registers the field first and the drawing second. Over time the ground deepens slightly into a warmer bone and the fleece develops the soft natural sheen that distinguishes hand-spun wool from machine yarn. The carpet is built to age well rather than to read as new.

What you are buying

Undyed Gabbehs in this fibre and at this scale, in clean condition, trade in the European specialist market at twelve to twenty thousand dollars. This is a current weaving in the same construction. The piece appreciates with use as the wool develops its patina, and the supply of undyed work is shrinking as the workshops shift toward dyed production for the contemporary market.

The piece in a room

5' × 8' (152 × 244 cm) suits a calm bedroom, a small study, or a reading corner where the rug can carry the floor without competition. The neutral palette pairs with raw oak, brushed brass, leather, and natural linen. The carpet works equally against pale plaster and against deeper warm walls; the undyed wool reads correctly in both settings.

Conservation

Rotate every six months so daylight reaches the surface evenly. Weekly vacuum, beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years. Undyed wool requires less intervention than dyed work over a long life because there is no colour relationship at risk.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
