The Arts and Crafts carpet traces to William Morris and his circle in late-Victorian England. Morris and his daughter May rejected the machine-loomed medallion carpets of the period for hand-knotted rugs in slow, plant-derived colour and stylised botanical pattern, drawn from the medieval English garden rather than from Persian sources.
Three weavers at the tufting frame for three to four months, with a finisher working behind them. The yarn was prepared in the same workshop where the rug was made; the small-batch dye process gives the surface its slight tonal drift. The back was sealed in latex with a cotton scrim, then the field was sheared at finish for an even pile and washed to settle the dye.
The composition
The work is built on a multi-toned palette. The geometry is sized for room scale, not for the photograph. Across distance the field reads as a single colour with movement inside it; on close approach the small variations in tone and weave become visible as the trace of a slow, hand-dyed process. The piece is built to be lived with rather than displayed, and it will deepen in colour and tighten in feel across its first year on the floor. The piece is built to be lived with rather than displayed and will continue to settle across the first year of use.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10' the rug carries a primary living arrangement or a king-size bed framed by side tables and an upholstered bench at the foot. The composition is sized to be read whole from the doorway and rewards close approach in equal measure. Pale walls let the field lift forward; mid-tone walls let it settle into the architecture as a quieter ground.
Care
The piece needs gentle weekly vacuuming, suction only, and prompt blotting of any spill with a clean dry cloth. Loose fibre will clear from the surface across the first six to eight weeks of use; this is a property of the tufting process and not a flaw in the rug. Have the piece professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
