Rugsville Floral Patterns Brown Wool Carpet 8' x 10'

Floral repeat patterns have a longer history in carpet weaving than any other vocabulary, predating the medallion form by centuries. The Indian workshops working in the Persian tradition have maintained this drawing across the twentieth century while the European dealer trade moved in and out of fashion for it. The carpet in front of you sits in that conservative discipline, with brown ground colour and ivory floral tracery drawn at a refined scale.

Three weavers worked the loom for roughly six months. Hand-spun wool was tied with the Persian asymmetric knot at a density that supports the fineness of the floral drawing without overworking the wool. The brown ground was prepared from a single dye lot to keep the tonal weight unified, and the ivory work was drawn from undyed fleece. Each row was packed against the vertical warp with a steel comb before the next was tied. The pile was sheared to eleven millimetres after a final wash to set the colour and lift the natural sheen.

The composition

A deep brown ground carries an all-over floral repeat in ivory. There is no central medallion. The drawing is treated as a continuous textile pattern rather than as a focal composition, which is the older Persian discipline before the medallion came to dominate the trade. Over time the ivory warms toward bone and the brown develops a slight reddish patina; the contrast settles rather than fading, the relationship deepening as the wool ages.

This is a current weaving on a hand-built loom in the same fibre and at the same density. The piece in a room

8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) takes a six-seat dining setting or a substantial sofa group above it. The brown ground sits on warm timber floors and against pale walls without losing the ivory drawing. Brass and walnut belong with this palette. Cooler chrome finishes fight the warmth of the brown; warm metals absorb into it.

Conservation

Rotate the rug every six months so traffic and daylight age the surface evenly. Weekly vacuum, beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton from the outside of the stain inward. Wool-trained conservator wash every five to seven years for a long working life.
