The Kazak weaving tradition emerged in the southern Caucasus in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, between the looms of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. Kazaks were never city carpets. They were woven by village and pastoral weavers for local use and were valued for the boldness of their geometry, the saturated red and indigo palette, and the unapologetic graphic confidence of the medallions. A Kazak does not negotiate. It states a single composition with strong colour and walks away.
This 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carpet was hand-knotted by three weavers over roughly seven months in the fine Kazak tradition. Wool was hand-spun in long staples and tied against a cotton foundation knot by knot. Madder root was prepared in copper vats over weeks to reach the deep, slightly orange-shifted red that distinguishes a vegetable-dyed Kazak from a chemically dyed reproduction. The pile was sheared low to keep the geometry crisp.
The composition
A red ground carrying stepped medallions in indigo and ivory, with secondary geometric motifs filling the field around them. The borders carry layered guard bands in the classical Caucasian register. The red is not stable; over the next decade it will warm toward a softer terracotta, the indigo will deepen and shift toward navy, and the ivory will move toward bone. A vegetable-dyed Kazak is engineered to age into a richer version of its initial state.
What you are buying
Period antique Kazak carpets of this scale and condition trade between $20,000 and $50,000 at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Rippon Boswell. The piece in front of you is a contemporary fine Kazak in the same idiom, on the same loom type, in the same fibre, for ₹1,76,099 against an MSRP of ₹7,04,000. A hand-knotted wool carpet of this construction appreciates with use rather than depreciating, and the value sits independent of design fashion cycles.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' anchors a sitting room with a sofa and two armchairs above it, a dining table for six to eight, or a generous primary bedroom under the bed. The red ground pairs with leather, with brass, with raw oak and walnut, and with off-white or warm cream plaster walls. The composition reads strongest as the organising graphic element of a room, with surrounding furniture restrained to support it.
Conservation
Rotate one half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five to six years. With this regimen the rug serves three generations and gains in value rather than losing it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
