An ivory-ground Kazak is the rarer cousin of the more familiar red Kazak, and the white field changes the entire reading of the design. Where a red ground absorbs the medallions and pulls them tight against itself, ivory pushes them forward and lets every angle of the drawing breathe. The motifs are the same Caucasian vocabulary of stepped medallions and archaic hooks, but the field colour repositions them as graphic objects rather than as a unified tribal pattern.
Four weavers shared the loom for roughly seven months to bring this 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) carpet off the beam. The wool is hand-spun highland fleece, with the irregularity in the yarn that the symmetric Turkish knot rewards and the smooth mill yarn does not. The ivory is undyed wool, washed in cold river water and aired before knotting so the natural creamy note carries through. Coloured passages were dyed in small copper batches from indigo, madder root, and walnut hull. The carpet is knotted in India by hands working the same Caucasian grammar that village looms have carried for two centuries.
The composition
An ivory ground carries linked geometric medallions in indigo, terracotta, and walnut brown, with a layered border that frames the field rather than crowding it. The contrast is high but not harsh; the undyed wool reads warmer than a bleached white and softens the geometry. As the carpet ages, the ivory will warm further into bone and the indigo will deepen, which is the colour shift collectors of vegetable-dyed work look for.
What you are buying
Antique ivory-ground Caucasian carpets of equivalent scale and drawing trade at international auction at $8,000 to $18,000 when they appear, and they appear rarely because the white field is harder to maintain over a century of use. This is a new weaving in the same Kazak idiom, on the same loom type, in the same hand-spun wool. The piece appreciates with use as the colour matures, and the structure is built for generational ownership.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) sits well under a full sofa configuration or a six-seat dining table. The ivory ground brightens a north-facing room and lifts darker walls, joinery, and upholstery; it suits walnut, oxblood leather, charcoal linen, and unlacquered brass. The geometry pairs well with both classical and mid-century furniture and is unusually forgiving of mixed pieces in one room.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off. Address spills immediately with a clean dry cotton cloth, blotting rather than rubbing; the ivory ground is what makes early intervention worth doing. Hand-wash by a trained wool conservator every five years. Stored carefully, an ivory Kazak of this build runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
