Working a sari-silk pile by hand is slow because the fibre is variable. Each knot has to be tied against thread that may have come from a different bolt of sari, dyed in a different season, by a different hand. What the irregularity gives back is light. The rug catches sunlight differently at every hour of the day.
2 weavers, 3 months on a vertical beam. About 120 knots to the square inch, asymmetric, every one tied by feel. Roughly 415,000 hand-tied knots in total. The pile is recycled sari silk, chosen because it takes plant dye to the depth the cartoon needs without flattening into uniformity. The colour was drawn from a workshop palette held over decades, with each batch matched against the master cartoon before the loom was strung.
The composition
Saturated red. The recycled silk catches light unevenly across the field, so the same rug reads warm at one hour and cool at another. Over time the saturations soften, the contrasts ease, and the rug develops the patina that distinguishes a long-lived hand-knotted piece from a printed reproduction.
What you are buying
The price reflects the loom-time and the fibre, nothing else. A new Sari Silk weaving of this size and density would sell at three to four times this figure through a London or New York dealer; the same piece would carry a similar premium at a major auction house. A hand-knotted carpet of this quality holds its value over decades and tends to gain rather than lose.
The piece in a room
4' x 6' (122 x 183 cm) works under a coffee table with seating arranged around it, in a primary bedroom as a foot-of-the-bed runner, or as the anchor in a small reading area. The red palette pairs with rattan, leather, linen upholstery, and wood flooring across the warm spectrum. The proportions also fit a child's bedroom or a smaller dressing area without crowding the floor plan. The piece is not flooring; it is the work the room is arranged around.
Conservation
The carpet wants two simple things: regular rotation, and gentle cleaning. Turn it half a revolution every six months, vacuum once a week with the beater bar lifted, blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Have it hand-washed by a wool conservator at five-year intervals. The rug is built to outlive its first owner and reward the next.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
