Complete your setup
Rust is the most generous of the warm grounds for a hand-knotted silk carpet. It carries enough red to read as warmth, enough brown to read as earth, and enough orange to lift a winter room without dominating it. The Ethos design comes out of a small group of contemporary studios working with sari silk in India, drawing on the geometry of older tribal pieces but loosening the strict symmetry that would mark the rug as a copy. The result is contemporary in temperament and traditional in technique.
The 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) field was tied by three weavers across roughly six months on a vertical loom. The pile is hand-spun sari silk, a fibre recovered from the cuttings of handloom sari production in India and respun into yarn. The cotton warps were tensioned by hand and the silk was clipped to under six millimetres so the drawing sits flat against the ground rather than blurring into pile.
The composition
The ground is rust, layered, with the heather that hand-spun silk produces because each strand carries traces of multiple sari dyes. Floral and tribal motifs cross the field in soft ivory, charcoal, sage, and faded gold. The lustre of silk means the rug shifts in colour as you walk past it, deepening when the pile bends away from the light and lifting when it bends toward you. The pattern is dense without being busy.
What you are buying
A 9' x 12' silk-pile carpet on cotton foundation, hand-knotted in India, is a category that the Western secondary market rates between four and seven lakh for comparable workshop pieces. The MSRP on this rug acknowledges that comparable. The asked price is set well below it because the workshop sells direct rather than through a dealer chain. Silk pile holds value across decades because the input fibre is finite and the labour is irreproducible by machine.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the working scale for a generous primary living room or a long dining setting. A rust ground reads as warm without going to the heat of true red, which makes it easy to pair with cool walls. The rug sits with cream linen, walnut, brass, and unglazed ceramic. Avoid pairing rust with a competing orange in soft furnishings; let the floor carry the warm note alone.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with suction only, beater bar off. Rotate the piece a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic and light wear the silk evenly. Blot spills immediately with dry cotton, never rub. Have the rug professionally hand-washed by a silk-trained conservator every five years. Cared for this way, the carpet runs sixty to eighty years and develops the soft sheen older silk pieces are prized for.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
