About five to six weeks of work for two tufters and a finisher. The pile is pushed through stretched canvas one row at a time, then trimmed by hand to bring the transitional into relief. The tufting tool is held like a pencil; the operator follows a drawing chalked onto the canvas, building colour fields one row at a time from the back of the work.

The composition was tufted over five to six weeks by a small workshop team. Wool yarn pulled through a primary backing with hand-held tufting guns, then cropped down by a finisher with long shears. The relief between transitional and ground is set in the cropping, not in the drawing.

The composition

The composition uses neutral as its base note, with the transitional motif articulated in shifts of density rather than sharp colour contrasts. At distance the rug reads as a single tone; on approach the pattern resolves. That two-distance behaviour is why the design holds in rooms of different scales. The drawing has been calibrated to work both as floor furniture seen from the sofa and as graphic ground seen from the doorway.

The piece in a room

The 8' x 10' (244 × 305 cm) format anchors a primary bedroom under a king bed with carpet showing on three sides, or a generous sitting room with a sectional and a pair of accent chairs. The transitional drawing reads from across the room. The rug also works in a dining setting under a six-to-eight seater table, with at least twenty-four inches of clearance beyond the chair backs when pulled out.

Care

Weekly vacuum, beater bar off. Spills lift with a cotton blot and cool water. Initial shedding is normal and resolves within a month or two. Professional dry-clean roughly every three years to keep the pile clean and the backing intact. The cotton scrim under the latex protects the structure of the rug, but heavy water exposure should still be avoided; never wet-clean a tufted rug at home.
