Rugsville Earthtone Jute Dhurrie 4' x 6'

Jute is the oldest workable bast fibre on the subcontinent, spun and woven on the Bengal floodplains for thousands of years before it was named on the global commodity exchanges in the nineteenth century.

This dhurrie came off a flatbed loom over 2 weeks. Two weavers shared the bench, the design built up by interlocking blocks of weft colour against a continuous warp. The structure is identical on both faces. The jute / sisal was selected for staple length and tensile strength suited to flat-weave construction, where every weft pass takes the full mechanical load of the design. Lower grades of fibre will pull and slacken over time; the grade used here holds the geometry through decades of household use without the warp showing through the design.

The composition

A natural field carrying the geometry as a graphic block, the flat surface giving the colour a matte register that holds steady through changing light. The pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed onto it, which is why the back of the rug carries the same design as the front in mirror. The flat construction means the rug takes a few weeks to settle into the floor it lives on. The first month of use will produce a slight relaxation in the structure as the weave finds its working tension, after which the dimensions stabilise and the rug holds shape for years.

The piece in a room

At 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug suits a covered porch, an open kitchen, a sitting area in a flat with cane and timber furniture, or a hallway. The natural reads against painted brick, white plaster, and warm timber equally well.

Care

Suction-only weekly vacuuming. Spot clean spills immediately with cool water and a white cloth, blotting rather than rubbing the area. Avoid prolonged direct sun on the dyed sections of the design. A specialist hand wash every two to three years preserves the colour and structure. Reverse the rug every season to balance fade and wear, and pad with a thin underlay against any hard floor.
