Across northern India the dhurrie has a workshop history that runs without interruption from the seventeenth century to the present. The technique demands patience rather than equipment, which is why the form survived industrialisation and continues to come off the same kind of horizontal loom that worked the rugs of the Mughal storerooms.

Two weavers at the loom for four to five weeks. The flatweave structure is built up row by row with the weft packed down by a hand-held beater after every pass. There is no pile to crush; the rug sits close to the floor and reads identically from above and below. The yarn was prepared, dyed and dried in small batches before any weaving began, which is why the colour holds the soft register that hand-spinning gives the fibre.

The composition

A multi-toned palette carries the field. The geometry holds at distance and resolves into smaller incident on approach, so the rug rewards both walking past and sitting beside. The wool was washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to a low matte sheen that catches changing light differently in the morning than in the evening. Saturation tightens in lamplight; the cooler tones lift in daylight. The piece will continue to settle into its palette across the first year of use. Photographic accuracy was never the goal; the colour the rug carries in person is warmer and more variable than any image of it can suggest.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' fits the conversation circle of a working living room or the foot of a queen-size bed. The rug becomes the visual ground of the arrangement; the architecture and the lighting are read against its palette rather than the other way round. The piece sits well across stone, timber, and engineered floors.

Care

Care for a flatweave is straightforward. Vacuum weekly on suction with the bar disengaged, and reverse the rug at the seasonal change to share the wear between both faces. Cool water and a mild detergent handle most spills if treated immediately and blotted from the outer edge inward. Professional cleaning at three-year intervals lifts the deeper dust the vacuum cannot reach.
