Kilim is the flatweave tradition that runs from the Balkans through Anatolia and the Caucasus into Iran. No knots, no pile, just a tightly packed weft that builds the design face-up as the rug grows. The geometry is forced by the technique. Curves do not exist on a kilim loom; everything resolves to step and slit.
Two on a horizontal loom for four to five weeks. The yarn was hand-spun and dyed in small lots before any of it reached the warp. The composition was built up by feel from the weaver's count, with the weft packed down after every pass by a hand-held beater. The piece is reversible and sits close to the floor.
The composition
A a red register field, anchored by the design but not crowded by it. The composition reads as one settled gesture rather than a tile that repeats. The colour will deepen by half a stop over the first year as the wool oxidises against ambient light, and another half stop across the next decade of use. There is no point at which the rug is finished; the surface continues to change in slow registration with the room. The slight unevenness of the surface is the working signature of the medium and is what keeps the piece from looking printed or industrial.
The piece in a room
5' x 8' is the canonical mid-scale rug for the Indian flat. The piece holds a sofa-and-chairs arrangement or a six-seat dining table with room to spare. The composition reads at standing distance from the doorway and rewards a slow look from a low chair beside it. Pairs with warm wood, brass and mid-tone walls.
Care
The piece is fully reversible. Run a vacuum over the surface weekly with the rotary brush switched off. At the spring and autumn change, lift the rug, sweep the floor beneath, and lay it down rotated end to end. Spills are blotted with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap. A dry clean every three years preserves the wool and refreshes the dye.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
