Dhurrie weaving runs through Indian textile history as a parallel tradition to the knotted carpet, older on Indian soil and quietly more domestic. Royal storerooms in Rajasthan and Gujarat held large dhurries by the hundred, and prison workshops under the British produced them at industrial scale through the nineteenth century.

The piece occupied Two for four to five weeks on a flat loom. The weft was packed against a cotton warp by hand, beat by beat, with the design carried in the weaver's memory rather than read from a paper plan. There is no pile and no knot; the rug is fully reversible and the surface reads as cloth more than carpet.

The composition

A green register is the working colour of the field. The geometry is built to read across distance and to reward close approach in equal measure. Small-batch vat dyeing produces a slight tonal drift that gives the surface its sense of life; from any standing position the rug reads as one quiet ground rather than a tile that repeats. Across the first year the saturation will tighten and the field will deepen by half a stop as the wool oxidises against ambient light.

The piece in a room

5' x 8' sits naturally under a six-seater dining arrangement, or beneath a medium sectional in a living area. The rug is sized to be visible from above when the family is seated and from the side when guests walk in. The geometry resolves at standing distance and the colour deepens under the wash of overhead light.

Care

Flip the rug periodically to even the wear; the flat structure is fully reversible and reads identically from either side. Vacuum on suction with the beater bar off. Blot spills with cold water and a drop of mild soap, working from the outside in to avoid spreading. Professional dry clean every three years preserves the finish and lifts dust the vacuum will not reach.
