The tufting gun arrived in the mid twentieth century and changed what large-format wool rugs could cost. The hand stayed essential. A skilled tufter draws the design through the canvas the way an etcher draws a plate, building the field row by row, judging colour balance and density without lifting the work to the front.
This rug was hand-tufted in India over 8 weeks by a small team of two tufters and a finisher. Wool pulled through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time, then bonded at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand at the end so the red field sits clean against any contour the design holds, and the rug was washed and dried flat to set the surface.
The composition
A composition built around a deep red field with the slow burn of madder-dyed wool. The pattern develops at a measured pace and the colour holds its register across the field. The negative space inside the pattern carries as much weight as the figure, which is the discipline a confident composition relies on.
The piece in a room
At 8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) the rug carries a working living room, a king bedroom, or a six-seat dining table. The red field reads as a considered ground for upholstery and timber, not as the thing the room is about. Lighter walls push the colour forward as a focal field; deeper walls let it settle into the architecture as a quieter register. All four legs of a sectional can sit on top with breathing space around the perimeter, which is the canonical living-room placement at this scale. Sits well beside mid-century timber furniture, contemporary low-slung upholstery, and lighting that throws warm rather than cool light.
Care
Weekly suction vacuuming. The shedding settles within two months. Spot clean with a clean damp cloth, working from the outside of the spill inward. Have the rug dry cleaned by a textile cleaner every couple of years to lift fine dust from the base of the pile.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
