Transitional design in the carpet world describes the meeting place between the classical floral vocabulary of Persia and the abstract ground-and-frame compositions of contemporary studios. The pattern in this carpet sits exactly there. The motifs read as floral and arabesque, but the scale has been pulled apart and the saturation pulled down so the field functions as a quiet ground rather than a declarative pattern. The wool and silk blend gives the surface two different ways of reading light.
Two weavers worked the loom in India for around six months. Roughly 2.3 million knots tied by hand on a cotton warp, with the silk highlights inserted at specific motifs to lift them above the wool ground. Ten percent silk content runs through the design where the floral peaks need to catch light. The remaining ninety percent is hand-spun wool, washed three times after the carpet came off the loom to set both fibres at the same hand.
The composition
A muted brown ground holds floral and arabesque work in pale ivory, faded rose, and soft olive. The silk highlights catch lamplight at certain angles and then disappear when the room is lit from above. There is no border in the traditional sense, which lets the field carry as a continuous composition. Brown grounds are the most underused colour in carpet design because they are difficult to dye well, but when they work the room gains the depth of a dark hardwood floor.
What you are buying
Hand-knotted wool and silk carpets of this construction from London and New York transitional dealers list at five to ten lakh equivalent. The yarn, the loom, the knot count, and the silk content are the same. What is different is the supply chain. Buying directly from a workshop in India removes the dealer layers. The carpet appreciates with use, the silk highlights gain rather than lose lustre with traffic, and the brown ground deepens with age.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a sofa and two armchairs in a formal living room, or sits under a six-seat dining table with the chairs fully accommodated on the pile. The brown ground reads against cream, off-white, and warm grey walls. It pairs particularly well with mid-century walnut furniture, with leather upholstery, and with brass or aged bronze metalwork.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year. Vacuum weekly with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. The silk highlights are particularly sensitive to mechanical brushing. Treat spills immediately with cold water and a soft cotton cloth, blotting only. Professional wool-and-silk wash every four years rather than five because the silk content benefits from earlier intervention. With this care the carpet stays in service for sixty years and beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
