The dhurrie composition belongs to a tradition where the weaver works without a knife, building the pattern entirely from the rhythm of weft over warp. The loom holds the warp under tension; the weft is picked through by hand in colour blocks, with the pattern emerging row by row as the work progresses up the loom.

Two weavers took three to four weeks at the loom. The pattern is built from coloured weft yarn picked over the warp by hand, every line an explicit choice. The result is a slim, flat carpet that lays close to the floor and works over hard surfaces without bunching. The selvedges are finished by hand at the end, a slow operation that protects the long edges from wear in use.

The composition

A beige palette built around the dhurrie drawing. The contrast is calibrated low so the rug works as a ground rather than as a graphic statement. Over years the dye depth shifts subtly under traffic and light, and the pattern emerges from the wear rather than retreating from it. The wool surface holds shadow at the cut edges, which is what gives a hand-finished rug its physical depth on the floor.

The piece in a room

At 4' x 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug sits in a primary bedroom under a queen bed with twelve to eighteen inches showing on either side, in a medium living room under the front legs of a sofa, or in a study laid full under desk and chair. The beige register pairs with walnut, oak, and warm metals. The dhurrie drawing reads cleanly from any of those orientations because the composition was scaled to live at this format rather than scaled down from a larger original.

Care

Weekly suction vacuum. Spot-clean spills with cool water and mild detergent. Flip end for end every six months. Professional cold wash every three years. Flatweaves are durable; the same rug runs decades when it is not asked to do pile-rug work. Avoid placing under heavy rolling furniture, which can leave permanent compression marks in the weft.
