Shag pile is a deliberate choice for tactile depth. The long fibres absorb light, soften acoustics, and give a room a hand-drawn quality that flat-pile rugs cannot. Hand-tufting sits between flatweave and hand-knotting in cost and structure. The pattern can be carried at a wider colour range than the loom geometry of a flatweave allows, and the relief of carved pile gives the rug the sculptural quality a flat surface cannot.

5 weeks on a stretched canvas under two tufters and a finisher. Polypropylene was punched through the canvas in tight rows, the back was bonded with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and the front was hand-sheared to bring the drawing into relief. The piece was finished with bound edges before it left the workshop.

The composition

Beige carries the field. The drawing rides above it in carved relief, which is what gives a hand-tufted rug its weight on the floor. The yarn is polypropylene, dense enough to walk on barefoot and resilient enough to hold its hand under furniture for years. The beige ground is even, dyed before tufting so the colour reads through the depth of the pile rather than only at the surface.

The piece in a room

8' × 10' (244 × 305 cm) works under a primary living room, a dining setting under a six-to-eight seat table, or a generous bedroom. The beige colour pairs with both warm and cool wood floors, with leather and linen upholstery, and with painted walls that lean toward chalk rather than gloss. Sits well under the kind of considered rooms that want one strong textile underfoot and let everything else go quiet around it. Allow the rug to extend a foot or so beyond seating on each side. The drawing reads better with breathing room than crowded under furniture.

Care

Use suction-only vacuuming on a weekly schedule. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Initial shedding settles after about six weeks of normal use. Have the rug professionally dry-cleaned every two to three years.
