Jute is the oldest workable bast fibre on the subcontinent, spun and woven on the Bengal floodplains for thousands of years before it was named on the global commodity exchanges in the nineteenth century.

The dhurrie was woven on a flatbed loom over 2 weeks by a pair of weavers, weft-faced cotton beaten tight against the warp so the surface lies almost as a textile rather than a pile carpet. No knots, no pile, only the interlock of the structure itself. Each strand of the jute / sisal was prepared by hand to a working diameter the loom could absorb without losing tension. The slight irregularity in the spin is part of how the surface reads as a living textile rather than as a printed substitute.

The composition

A natural ground worked through with geometry the form has carried for two centuries. Flat-weave does not hide its construction; the visible weft is part of the design and reads as a deliberate textural element rather than as something to look past. The piece reads differently from across the room than from close range. At distance the natural reads as a single ground; on approach the structural register of the weave and the small irregularities in the dye come through as the actual surface of the work.

The piece in a room

4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) works under a dining table, in a sun-filled corner, in a hallway with heavy traffic, or as a base layer with a smaller patterned rug stacked on top. The natural register sits well with cane furniture, painted plaster, and warm timber.

Care

Light vacuuming once a week, suction only, no rotating brush. Spot clean with cool water; do not introduce strong detergents that contain optical brighteners. The piece is reversible and benefits from being turned over each season. A specialist clean every two to three years extends the working life by decades, and a thin underlay protects both the rug and the floor beneath it.
