A flatweave reads differently from a knotted carpet. There is no pile to soften the colour; the geometry is what carries the room. The weaver works the weft back and forth across a tensioned warp, building the pattern in the structure itself, and the back of the finished rug carries the drawing almost as cleanly as the face does.
This rug was woven in India over three weeks by a single weaver working a horizontal floor loom. Silk weft laid across a cotton warp, beaten down with a heavy comb after each pass so the pattern locks into the structure. No pile, no knot, the colour is the weave. The finished piece is light enough to lift and roll easily, and lays flat without a pad on a tiled or wooden floor.
The composition
A neutral ground built directly into the weave, with the pattern emerging from the structure rather than sitting on top of it. The piece is reversible and lies flat. Light traffic burnishes the surface rather than wearing it, and the geometry holds at any viewing distance from a standing eye.
On the weaving
A note on the structure: a hand-woven flatweave is a single layer of textile rather than a pile-on-foundation construction. The wool is the structure, the cotton warp is the skeleton, and the pattern is built into the weave itself. The piece reads as a graphic composition, lays flat without a thick pad, and tolerates being layered under a smaller pile rug or a hide for a second register in the same room.
The piece in a room
4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) is the working scale for a corridor, a study, or under a side table. The neutral ground reads against warm white, putty, or a softer plaster tone, and the geometry holds at viewing distance from a sofa or dining chair. Pairs with walnut and rosewood furniture, leather seating, brass and bronze accents, linen drapery. Direct sunlight on the rug deepens the colour relationships; the piece is built to be lived on, not protected.
Care
Light vacuuming on suction only. Spot-clean spills with a damp cloth, working from the edge in toward the centre to keep the stain from spreading. Lift and air the rug outside twice a year. A flatweave is forgiving; rotate it end for end each season to even the wear, and use a thin pad underneath if the rug is going on a polished hard floor.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
