Dhurrie weaving is the Indian flatweave tradition, refined in the village workshops of the north for at least three centuries. Weft-faced wool laid across a cotton warp, the pattern built up colour by colour as the weaver works the loom. The structure is reversible, light, and forgiving of foot traffic in a way the knotted carpet simply is not.
The work was carried out in India across three weeks, with a single weaver at a single horizontal loom. The weft is silk, the warp cotton, and the comb is brought down hard after each colour pass so the rug holds its drawing without slack. The finished piece is reversible and gains a soft burnish on the surface that is in regular use.
The composition
Brown as the dominant tone, with the secondary colours brought in as the weft changes. The flatweave structure means the pattern goes through the rug; the back reads almost as the face does. The piece is light to lift and easy to layer, and the geometry pairs comfortably with both period and contemporary furniture.
On the weaving
A note on the wool: hand-spun yarn carries small variations in thickness and twist that no machine spinning can replicate. Those variations show up in the finished surface as a faint texture across the field, the visual signature of a piece made by hand rather than by a power loom. The colour is yarn-dyed before weaving, locking the pigment into the staple itself.
The piece in a room
A 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) format works as a corridor, a study, or under a side table. The brown field gives the room an axis. Walnut and rosewood furniture, leather seating, brass and bronze accents, linen drapery sit comfortably on it; the geometry pairs poorly with strongly patterned upholstery, where the rug expects to be the only graphic element holding the floor.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off; a flatweave does not need aggressive agitation, and a hard beater will catch in the weft. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth. Air the rug outside in indirect sun every six months to refresh the wool. Professional cleaning every two to three years is enough. A flatweave on a quality cotton warp will outlast most pile carpets in the same room.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
