The dhurrie composition belongs to a tradition where the weaver works without a knife, building the pattern entirely from the rhythm of weft over warp. The loom holds the warp under tension; the weft is picked through by hand in colour blocks, with the pattern emerging row by row as the work progresses up the loom.
Two to three weavers took three to four weeks at the loom. The pattern is built from coloured weft yarn picked over the warp by hand, every line an explicit choice. The result is a slim, flat carpet that lays close to the floor and works over hard surfaces without bunching. The selvedges are finished by hand at the end, a slow operation that protects the long edges from wear in use.
The composition
The gold field carries the work. Secondary tones sit close in value rather than competing, so the eye reads the pattern as one composition rather than as a layered surface. The dhurrie structure shows differently in morning and evening light, the weave catching shadow at low angles and flattening to a single colour plane at midday. Walk past the rug and it changes; sit beside it and it settles. That movement is part of how a hand-finished textile lives in a room.
The piece in a room
A 5' x 8' (152 × 244 cm) rug works as the centre of a small living grouping, under a queen bed, or in a dining nook for four to six. The gold palette gives the room its ground without claiming the focal position. The rug behaves as the architectural plane the furniture floats on, which is the proper job of a rug at this scale; the eye should land on the seating or the art, not on the floor itself.
Care
Weekly suction vacuum. Spot-clean spills with cool water and mild detergent. Flip end for end every six months. Professional cold wash every three years. Flatweaves are durable; the same rug runs decades when it is not asked to do pile-rug work. Avoid placing under heavy rolling furniture, which can leave permanent compression marks in the weft.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
