Rugsville Consanguine Handmade Jute Dhurrie Carpet 4' x 6'

The Indian dhurrie tradition produced flat-woven cotton and wool floor coverings for the courts and havelis of the subcontinent long before the first knotted carpet workshops were established under Mughal patronage. The neutral reading in this piece sits in the contemporary end of that arc.

The dhurrie was hand-loomed in 2 weeks of bench time. The construction is weft-faced flat-weave, no pile, no knot, the design built into the structure of the cloth itself. The dye registers on jute / sisal sit deep into the fibre rather than as a surface coat, which is why the colour reads with the same depth on the back of the rug as on the front. Both faces are working surfaces; many households reverse the rug at the seasons to even out the wear and the light exposure.

The composition

The natural reads with the soft, slightly hand-spun irregularity that distinguishes loom work from machine print. Pattern is built up from solid blocks of colour rather than through pile relief, and the joins where colour meets colour are visible as small structural marks the weaver did not try to hide. The piece reads differently from across the room than from close range. At distance the natural reads as a single ground; on approach the structural register of the weave and the small irregularities in the dye come through as the actual surface of the work.

At 4' × 6' (122 × 183 cm) the rug suits a covered porch, an open kitchen, a sitting area in a flat with cane and timber furniture, or a hallway. The natural reads against painted brick, white plaster, and warm timber equally well.

Care

Suction-only weekly vacuuming. Spot clean spills immediately with cool water and a white cloth, blotting rather than rubbing the area. Avoid prolonged direct sun on the dyed sections of the design. A specialist hand wash every two to three years preserves the colour and structure. Reverse the rug every season to balance fade and wear, and pad with a thin underlay against any hard floor.
