The Serapi was the high end of the Heriz weaving district in north-west Iran in the late nineteenth century. Where standard Heriz pieces leaned on a few stable patterns and consistent weave, the Serapi was looser, larger in scale, and softer in palette, with the central medallion drawn at a size that would carry across an Anglo-American drawing room. The pattern in front of you descends directly from that lineage, redrawn at workshop scale and tied into hand-knotted wool by Indian weavers trained in the Persian asymmetric knot.
Three weavers shared the 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool, drawn from highland fleece for length and resilience, and the foundation is cotton, warped on a vertical beam to a uniform tension. Each knot was tied by feel and combed down before the next row, and the dyes were prepared in copper vats before the wool was lowered for colouring.
The composition
A central medallion in faded brick rust sits on a deep red ground, surrounded by ivory corner spandrels and a layered border in indigo and bone. The reds carry the gentle irregularity that natural-dyed wool always brings, deepening in some passages and lifting in others. Over the next decade the rust will warm and the indigos will settle. A Serapi does not arrive complete; it arrives ready to start.
What you are buying
Antique Serapi and Heriz carpets in equivalent condition and scale sell through Christie's, Sotheby's, and Rippon Boswell at attribution prices in the range of twenty to fifty thousand US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to comparable density. The Western dealer market is firmer still. Hand-knotted wool on cotton appreciates with use rather than depreciating. There is no other floor object with that property.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) is the canonical drawing-room and dining-room scale. The Serapi expects a long sofa run with armchairs above the medallion or a generous dining table set on the field. Mid-tone walls hold the saturation; cream walls let the red sing. Direct sunlight helps over time; UV restores dye depth that interior light slowly washes out.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so light and traffic age the piece evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years and outlives its first owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
