The oriental Serapi works in a different register than its floral cousin. Where the floral version pulls from the Safavid garden, the oriental drawing reaches further north into the geometric vocabulary of the Caucasus and the Heriz village tradition. Stepped medallions, hooked spandrels, and bold border guards. The floral elements are reduced to angular abstractions, set inside a colour scheme that runs deeper than most Persian decorative weaving.
Hand-knotted in India by three weavers across roughly five months at a vertical loom. About 3.0 million Persian asymmetric knots tied row by row across a cotton warp. The pile is hand-spun wool. Madder root provides the rust and red, indigo the deeper blues, walnut the warm browns, and oak gall the dark accents at the corners of the medallion. The dye baths are matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the wool is lowered. Each colour is laid down in small batches, which is what gives the field its tonal life.
The composition
A stepped medallion in ivory and dark blue centres a deep red and rust ground. The drawing is angular rather than curved. Border guards in cream and indigo carry a hooked rosette repeat. The red carries a slow shift along the length of the rug as the dye batches change, an effect celebrated in this tradition rather than corrected. The geometry holds at a distance; the small angular detail rewards approach.
What you are buying
Comparable Serapi weavings of this scale and palette sit in the $25,000 to $50,000 range at international auction when they appear with strong pile. The retail market on restored Western dealer floors runs higher. This is a contemporary hand-knotted weaving in the same construction lineage, the same fibre, drawn by a master weaver. The economics track weaver-time and material, not the secondary-market age premium. The piece appreciates with sympathetic use.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a sitting room with a sectional plus armchairs, or a six-seater dining setup positioned above the rug rather than across it. The red and rust palette settles against warm wood floors, lime-washed plaster, and brass fittings. It also pairs cleanly with deep blue or forest green walls when the indigo borders are allowed to lock into the architecture. Keep upholstery in solids; the rug expects to be the only graphic event of the floor.
Conservation
Rotate two times a year so the pile wears evenly under traffic and light. Vacuum once a week with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth at first contact. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to seven years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
