An ivory ground in a Serapi is a deliberate choice. The early twentieth-century weavers reserved pale fields for the rugs commissioned by European drawing rooms, where the designer wanted the architecture to speak first and the rug to act as a quiet ground beneath it. The drawing has to be cleaner than a red-ground piece because nothing hides in ivory. Every knot is read.
Three weavers worked the loom for about five months, tying a Persian asymmetric knot row by row across a cotton warp. The wool is hand-spun, washed in soft water, and dyed in copper vats with madder, indigo, walnut, and oak gall before the loom is strung. Ivory is achieved by leaving the pale fleece undyed, which means the colour will warm slightly with age into a soft bone tone. The medallion and borders are drawn by the head weaver from a coloured sketch consulted at the start of each section, not from a printed cartoon.
The composition
An ivory ground holds a central medallion in faded rust and indigo, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion in mirror. The main border is a layered palmette and vine in soft red and dark blue. The ivory does not stay perfectly flat; it carries a faint warm drift from one end of the rug to the other, the trace of the dye lots in the undyed wool baths. Over time the rust deepens, the indigo darkens, and the ivory pulls toward bone. The contrast sharpens with use rather than dulling.
What you are buying
Antique ivory-ground Serapi carpets in this size sell at major Western auction houses in a range of roughly $30,000 to $60,000 when they appear in honest condition. This is a new weaving in the same construction lineage, in the same fibre, knotted by hand to the same density. The price reflects weaver-months and material rather than the age premium attached to nineteenth-century examples. Hand-knotted wool of this calibre appreciates rather than depreciates with use.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) the rug supports a primary living arrangement or a six-seater dining table. The ivory field is unusually flexible against wall colour. Pale chalk walls let the medallion read as a focal painting on the floor. Saturated walls in deep blue or olive let the ivory glow forward as a graphic field. Pair with restrained upholstery in linen, leather, and undyed cotton.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn twice a year. Vacuum weekly with suction only. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth and avoid detergents at first contact. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. With this care the piece runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
