Oriental drawing in a Serapi context refers to the older, pre-trade vocabulary of geometric medallions, hooked corner spandrels, and stylised animal and tree motifs that the village weavers carried before the western buying offices arrived in the 1870s. A Serapi Oriental is a quieter rug than a Serapi Floral. The drawing is harder, more architectural, with sharper transitions between field and motif.

Three weavers worked the loom over approximately seven months in India, each tying knots with the asymmetric Persian draw against a vertical beam. Wool came from highland flocks, hand-spun and washed before dyeing. The beige ground is undyed cream-coated fleece. The accents are plant dyes, madder root for the rust passages, indigo for the deep blues, walnut hull for the browns, and oak gall for the dark outlines. Cotton warp and weft, beaten down at the close of each row to the density the design needs.

The composition

A beige ground holds a hooked medallion in rust and indigo, with corner spandrels echoing the medallion outline. The drawing is angular, drawn with the discipline of a village cartoon rather than the curves of a court atelier. The patina will arrive slowly. Beige warms toward bone, rust softens toward terracotta, indigo deepens with oxidation. The geometry holds clear over decades because the drawing is built on architectural lines rather than fluid floral repeats.

What you are buying

Antique Serapi Orientals in 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) on undyed grounds appear at the major auction houses at thirty-five to seventy thousand dollars when collectors release them. This is a current weaving on the same loom geometry in the same hand-spun wool with the same vegetable dye chemistry. It is sold to be used. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which makes the entry price an investment rather than a consumption.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) settles into a serious living area or holds a dining floor for ten people with chairs free. The beige ground works against pale plaster, raw concrete, lime-washed brick, and oak panelling. It accepts both modernist furniture in walnut and brass and traditional pieces in mahogany or rosewood. The geometric drawing is graphic enough to anchor a contemporary room and traditional enough for a colonial-era space.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring and autumn so the field ages evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the edge of the spot inward. Engage a wool-trained conservator for a hand wash every five to seven years using plant-soap chemistry. With care, the carpet runs eighty to a hundred years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
