Serapi is the trade name attached to the finer Heriz weavings that began leaving the looms of north-west Persia in the second half of the nineteenth century. The drawing is more architectural than the dense floral curtains of the southern workshops. Geometry, restraint, a single anchored medallion, large fields of quiet ground. The Anglo-American collectors who first imported them used the word Serapi to mark out the better-drawn, lower-knot-count examples that hung above the village daily run. The pattern in this rug descends from that lineage, redrawn for the contemporary room.
Three weavers shared the loom for roughly five months. The pile is hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted by feel, row by row, against a vertical beam. The yarn was dyed in small batches before the loom was strung, which gives the beige ground its slow tonal drift across the field rather than the flat machine-even saturation of synthetic carpets. Every line in the medallion is drawn from memory by the head weaver. There is no cartoon pinned above the loom, only a coloured sketch consulted at the start of each new section.
The composition
A central diamond medallion sits inside a soft beige field that widens toward the corners. Spandrels in deeper sand, a guard band in muted indigo, and a main border carrying the classic turtle-palmette repeat in faded rust and ivory. The beige is not a single tone. It moves between oat, biscuit, and warm sand depending on how the light crosses the pile. With age the ground will pale further and the indigo will deepen, so the contrast sharpens over the first decade of use rather than dulling.
What you are buying
Antique Serapi carpets of comparable size and condition trade at international auction in the range of $20,000 to $45,000 when they appear in good order. This is a new weaving in the same construction tradition, the same knot family, the same hand-spun fibre, drawn to the same restraint. The price you pay reflects the months of weaver-time, not the secondary-market premium attached to age. The piece appreciates with use rather than depreciating.
The piece in a room
8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is the working scale for a primary living room or a six-seater dining table set above the field rather than astride it. The beige ground takes warm wood, leather, and brass without competing. Walls in chalk, lime wash, or the softer ochres push the medallion forward. Direct daylight is welcome and helps the wool patina evenly.
Conservation
Rotate a half turn every six months so foot traffic and light age the pile evenly. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged, suction only. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A trained wool conservator should hand-wash the piece every five to seven years. Cared for this way, the rug will outlast its first two owners.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
