The composition is built around a red ground broken by rust floral repeats. Everything else in the rug works in service of that primary tension. Corner spandrels, border guard bands, the small geometry of leaf and palmette inside the field, the choice of indigo or walnut for the secondary outline, all of it follows from the central decision to let madder and walnut speak together at full saturation.
This rug was hand-knotted in India over approximately seven months by a team of three weavers working a vertical loom. Knots were tied in the Persian asymmetric draw against a paper cartoon mounted above the warp. The wool is hand-spun from highland fleece, washed in cold water to keep the lanolin before it enters the dye bath. Madder root made the red, walnut hull the rust, indigo the secondary blues, oak gall the darker outlines. Cotton warp and weft hold the structure flat to its full nine-by-twelve span.
The composition
A red field, rust floral repeats, ivory and indigo accents. The drawing is slightly asymmetric, the way village Serapis traditionally were, because the cartoon is read by hand rather than mirrored mechanically across the field. The borders are layered in three guard bands. Madder lightens slowly with daylight, walnut hull deepens, and indigo gains atmospheric depth as the wool oxidises across the first decade of use.
What you are buying
Comparable nineteenth-century floral Serapis in 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) appear at the major international houses at thirty to seventy thousand dollars when one surfaces in good condition. This is a contemporary weaving in the same tradition on the same loom geometry, made from the same fibre, dyed with the same plant chemistry. It is built to be used and to gain value over decades rather than depreciate from the moment of installation.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) holds a serious living floor or a dining setting for eight to ten people with chairs out. The red and rust palette suits warm-toned plaster walls, walnut joinery, antique brass, and oxblood or oatmeal upholstery. The rug pairs equally well with traditional rosewood furniture and contemporary pieces in oak and steel. Avoid placing it against red brick walls. The two reds compete and the field reads flat.
Conservation
Rotate the carpet a half turn twice a year. Vacuum weekly on suction with the beater bar lifted. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth, working from the perimeter of the spot inward. Schedule a hand wash with a wool conservator every five to seven years using plant-soap chemistry. Properly maintained, the carpet outlives multiple generations of furniture installed above it.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
