Complete your setup
New Zealand wool is the only fibre that takes vegetable dye to the saturation a red and rust Serapi needs without losing the irregular grain that gives the carpet its hand. The fleece is longer-staple, lower in coarse outer fibre, and accepts madder root in a single bath without crystalising the way coarser local wools tend to. The decision to weave a Serapi in New Zealand wool is the difference between a flat red and a red that breathes.
The loom carried three weavers across approximately seven months in India. The drawing was set by a paper cartoon hung above the warp, knot by knot in the Persian asymmetric draw. Madder root produced the field, rust came from a second walnut-hull bath layered over the madder, indigo built the deep blues, and ivory came from undyed cream-coloured fleece. Cotton warp and weft, beaten tight at the close of each line so the foundation lies flat across the full nine-by-twelve span.
The composition
A red and rust field with floral repeats moving across the surface in scattered rather than centralised drawing. The visual logic is botanical, layered, and slightly asymmetric. Corner spandrels in ivory and indigo bracket the composition. The colour is alive. Madder lightens toward terracotta over years, rust deepens, the indigos move from inky to atmospheric. The rug evolves with the room rather than fixing it at a single moment.
What you are buying
Antique floral Serapis in 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) with red-and-rust palettes regularly sell at Christie's and Rippon Boswell between thirty and seventy thousand dollars. The current piece is a new weaving in the same tradition, on the same loom geometry, in a comparable fibre, using the same plant-dye chemistry. It is sold to be used. Few objects of any kind in a domestic interior gain value with time. A Serapi at this construction quality is one of them.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) takes a generous drawing room or a formal dining setting with eight to ten chairs fully drawn. The red-and-rust palette pairs with warm timbers, brass detail, leather upholstery, and creamy plaster walls. Avoid placing the rug under strongly patterned curtains or wall art. The Serapi is a graphic field that prefers to set the visual ground rather than compete for it.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so the south-facing edge does not bleach faster than the back. Vacuum on suction weekly, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Engage a wool conservator every five to seven years for a hand wash with plant-soap chemistry. Stored or moved, roll the rug pile-out around a sturdy core to prevent compression of the pile.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
