Floral Serapis hold a curious place in the carpet market. They borrow the formal vocabulary of court Persian weaving but speak it in a village dialect, larger in scale, slower in detail, and far more generous with negative space. That combination is why nineteenth-century Anglo-American buyers preferred them over the more crowded Tabriz drawings. They read at the scale of an interior rather than at the scale of a manuscript.

About 3.0 million hand-tied knots, distributed across roughly five months of work by three weavers sharing a vertical loom. The wool is hand-spun in small village lots and washed in soft river water before dyeing. The cotton warp is kept under steady tension by wedges driven into the loom frame. Every knot is a Persian asymmetric tied around two warp threads and trimmed by hand at the row break. The result is a slightly heftier pile than the Indo-Persian average, which is what gives a Serapi its physical presence underfoot.

The composition

A diamond medallion in ivory and indigo floats over a deep red and rust field, with vining floral repeats running into the corners. The border carries an alternating palmette-and-rosette band in cream and brown. Up close the floral elements break into small angular geometries because the design has been drawn knot by knot rather than smoothed by a printed cartoon. From across a room the geometry resolves back into floral form. The ageing is gradual: rust will warm, ivory will move toward bone, and the indigo will deepen.

What you are buying

An equivalent antique Serapi at international auction sits in the $25,000 to $55,000 range when condition is honest. Western retail dealers double that for restored examples. This rug is a hand-knotted contemporary weaving in the same construction family, drawn by a master weaver, woven in hand-spun wool. The economics are different from age-based pricing. The price tracks the weaver-time and the materials. The piece compounds in value with sympathetic use.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carries a primary sitting room with a three-seater plus loungers, or a dining setup for six to eight. The red and rust palette warms cool-painted plaster and looks particularly settled against warm teak or walnut joinery. Brass and aged copper in the lighting tie the field together. Keep adjacent textiles plain; this rug is designed to be the graphic event of the floor.

Conservation

Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn. Vacuum once a week with suction only and the beater bar disengaged. Treat spills by blotting with a clean dry cloth, then a damp one, never with detergent at first contact. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five to six years.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
