Complete your setup
The floral Serapi sits one step closer to the Tabriz court tradition than its open-field cousins. The drawing pulls in palmettes, vines, and rosettes from the Safavid garden vocabulary, then loosens them into the larger scale and flatter colour blocking that the Heriz district is known for. The rust ground gives the design its weight. The red carries the weave forward across the room without leaning on the medallion alone.
Hand-knotted in India over roughly five months by three weavers working a vertical loom in coordinated rows. The wool is hand-carded and hand-spun, which leaves a faint irregularity in the yarn diameter that catches light differently on every knot. Dyes are prepared from madder root for the rust, indigo for the deeper blue tones, and walnut hull for the soft browns in the borders. Each dye lot is matured for two to three weeks before the wool is lowered, and the small variations between batches are what give the field its slow tonal movement.
The composition
A radial floral medallion in cream and indigo set against a saturated red and rust field. Corner spandrels echo the medallion in mirror. The main border carries a layered floral repeat in indigo and cream. The red is not flat. It shifts between brick, garnet, and old-rose along the length of the rug as the dye lots change, an effect celebrated rather than corrected in this tradition. The pattern reads at a distance and reveals its drawing on approach.
What you are buying
Comparable late-nineteenth-century Serapi carpets at Sotheby's and Rippon Boswell sell in the $25,000 to $50,000 band when they appear with intact pile. This rug is a contemporary weaving in the same lineage, in hand-spun wool, on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand to the same density. The cost reflects weaver-months and material, not auction provenance. Hand-knotted wool of this build appreciates with use.
The piece in a room
At 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) the rug holds an eight-seater dining setup or a full sectional. The red ground anchors rooms with pale walls and lime-washed plaster. It also sits comfortably against deep teal or forest green, where the indigo borders lock into the architecture. Avoid pairing with strongly patterned upholstery; the floral field expects to be the graphic centre of the room.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year so light and wear distribute evenly. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth and follow with a slightly damp cloth if needed. Schedule a hand-wash by a wool-trained conservator every five years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years and beyond.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
