About 2.5 million asymmetric knots, roughly seven months on a vertical loom, three weavers paced to a single hand-drawn cartoon. The Serapi tradition is built on those proportions. The rug succeeds when the maths is honoured and the pattern is left enough room to breathe. A floral red and rust Serapi, in particular, depends on the discipline of leaving the field alone.

The weaving was done in India by a workshop carrying a multi-generation lineage from the original north-western Persian villages whose work the western trade renamed Serapi in the 1880s. Wool was hand-spun from highland fleece. Madder root produced the red, with rust tones built up from a second bath in walnut hull. Indigo went into the blues, and the ivory is undyed wool from white sheep. Cotton warps and wefts hold the structure flat across the full nine-by-twelve footprint.

The composition

A red field crossed by floral repeats in rust, ivory, and indigo. The flowers are stylised rather than botanical, simplified to the geometry a village cartoon could hold without visual noise. The corner spandrels carry the same vocabulary. The borders are layered three deep, the innermost in ivory to lift the field. Daylight will warm the red over years toward terracotta, the rust will deepen, the indigos will gain depth as oxidation works through the wool.

What you are buying

Comparable antique Serapi carpets in 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) with floral fields appear at Sotheby's and Rippon Boswell in the thirty-to-seventy-thousand-dollar range. The current rug is a continuation of that tradition, woven on the same construction, in the same fibre, to a comparable density. It accumulates value through use rather than losing it. Few objects of any kind installed in a domestic interior carry that quality.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) takes a generous living floor or a dining setting for eight people with chairs free. The rust-and-red palette sits beautifully against creamy lime-washed walls, oak floorboards, and walnut joinery. It pairs with deep brown leather, raw linen, and brass lighting. The pattern is dense enough to forgive a busy upholstered room and disciplined enough to anchor a more austere arrangement.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year so the south-facing side does not bleach faster than the back. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar disengaged. Blot spills immediately with a dry cotton cloth. Engage a wool conservator every five to seven years for a hand wash. The carpet is a long-life object built to outlast the room it enters today.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
