Green Serapis are the rarest of the Serapi family. The villages of north-western Persia kept fewer dye masters who could push indigo through a second bath of weld without losing depth, and the carpets that emerged from those workshops were usually held by the families that commissioned them. Floral green Serapis specifically, with the open field discipline that defines the type, are difficult to find on the secondary market in any size, and almost impossible at nine by twelve.
Three weavers worked this rug across approximately seven months. Knots were tied with the Persian asymmetric draw against a vertical loom, the pace set by a hand-drawn cartoon hanging above the warp. Wool was hand-spun from highland fleece, washed cold before dyeing. The green ground was built in two baths, indigo for the blue base and weld for the yellow, with the dye master pulling and re-dipping the skeins until the colour landed. The reds came from madder root, the ivory is undyed wool, the secondary tones from oak gall and walnut hull.
The composition
A green field reading toward bottle and forest depending on the angle of light, broken by floral repeats in red, ivory, and indigo. Corner spandrels carry the same vocabulary. The borders frame the field in three layered guard bands, restrained enough to let the green carry the room. The colour is alive. Indigo darkens with oxidation, weld holds the warm note longer than chemistry predicts, and the field lands somewhere richer at year five than it did at year one.
What you are buying
Antique green-ground Serapis in 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) are an auction category that runs forty to eighty thousand dollars when one surfaces in collectible condition. This is a new piece in the same construction, the same fibre, the same dye chemistry. It is an object that gains value through use, not loses it. The price reflects current cost of materials and weaver-months, not the secondary market it will eventually enter.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) suits a substantial living area or a formal dining floor. The green ground reads cool against pale plaster, warm against rosewood and aged oak, and sits naturally with brass lighting, leather club chairs, and undyed linen upholstery. The pattern holds at distance and rewards approach. Avoid placing it against forest-green walls. The two greens compete and the field flattens.
Conservation
Rotate twice a year to age the surface evenly between sunlit and shaded passages. Vacuum weekly on suction, beater bar off. Blot spills immediately with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Hand wash with a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. Maintained well, the rug holds for eighty to a hundred years, accumulating patina that can only come from time.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
